2022 ICC Women’s World Cup Team Preview-West Indies women

West Indies Women surely are the underdogs of the tournament who entered this mega-event with not being favourites but surely a dangerous side to reckon with. Although the Caribbean cricketers haven’t been able to achieve massive victories under their belt since the last World Cup, their side is a mixture of experienced and skilled young players which surely is a great mixture that makes one unit a formidable force. The ongoing mega-event has been proven great for the Maroon Caps as they have bagged three victories out of five games they have played thus far.

Led by Stafanie Taylor, West Indies Women are wishing to find their maiden title in the marquee tournament. The Women ODI World Cup hasn’t been rewarding for the West Indies Women as they are yet to lift their first trophy. The closest these women came closer to their eventual aim was in 2013 where they lost the final to Australia.

West Indies have played in six editions of the Women’s World Cup to date and have made it to the final once, where they lost to Australia. They didn’t have a great start in 2013 edition as they won only one game during the group stage but they made it into the next stage of the tournament. The next stage these women turned their tide and made it into the final and capped the tournament being the runner-up.

Talking about the ongoing Women World Cup, West Indies so far has beaten New Zealand, the defending champions England, and the new addition Bangladesh Women, and currently sits at 3rd number in the points table of the mega-event.

The most impactful player for the West Indies has been the young and talented Hayley Matthews. Before the start of this mega-event everyone was eying on the sensational Matthews as she has been the vital cog for her side and is capable of scoring plenty of runs and dismantling the stumps. So far, in this tournament, the 23-year-old has hit the most runs, most sixes for her side. Moreover, the talismanic all-rounder is the leading wicket-taker in her group and has taken the most number of catches and was adjudged two player of the match awards.

Apart from Matthews, Stafanie Taylor, who also is the captain, is a very key and experienced player. The 30-year-old has accumulated more than 5000 runs in the ODIs and has scalped more than 150 wickets in the said format of the game. She carries experience combined with talent which makes her the vital cog of her side. Taylor is also accompanied by Anisa Mohammed, Chedean Nation, and Deandra Dottin who hold the potential to change the momentum of the game in no time.

The West Indies Women will play the last of their two games against Pakistan and South Africa on 21st and 24th March, respectively.
